Dr. John Brademas

Dr. John Brademas, President emeritus of New York University, was President from 1981-1992 and led NYU's transition to a national and international residential research university. He is the first Greek-American elected to the Congress of the United States and served for 22 years (1959-1981), where he won a reputation for his leadership in education and the arts. He also served as the Majority Whip of the United States House of Representatives for the Democratic Party from 1977 to 1981. He is a graduate of Harvard, BA, magna cum laude, and Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, where he earned a PhD. He has been awarded honorary degrees by 55 colleges and universities, including Oxford. In 2005, New York University launched the John Brademas Center for the Study of Congress at NYU's Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service to advance both scholarly and public understanding of the role of Congress in the American Constitutional system.
