The Honorable Gerald L. Baliles is Director of the University of Virginia's Miller Center of Public Affairs, the mission of which is to reflect, research and report on matters of national governance, with special focus on the American Presidency. Baliles previously served as a Virginia legislator, Attorney General (Outstanding Attorney General in 1985) and Governor (1986-1990). During his tenure as Governor he was Chairman of the National Governors Association. As a member of the law firm of Hunton and Williams, he chaired the section on international law and practiced aviation law, as well as chaired such national and regional entities as the Presidentially-appointed Commission on Airline Competitiveness, the Southern States Energy Board, the Chesapeake Bay Blue Ribbon Panel, the Education Quality Committee of the Southern Regional Education Board, the AGB Commission on Academic Presidency, and the AGB Commission on the State of the Presidency in Higher Education. In addition, Baliles provided leadership in establishing Miller Center projects such as the National War Powers Commission, the Caplin Conference on the World Economy, and the National Discussion and Debate Series. He serves on the Boards of Altria and Norfolk Southern, was Chairman of PBS for multiple terms, has served on several other civic and corporate Boards, including Newport News Shipbuilding, the Nature Conservancy in Virginia, and the Virginia Historical Society, holds honorary degrees from eleven institutions of higher education, and resides in Charlottesville, Virginia, with his wife, Robin Deal Baliles.
