The Honorable Joseph Duffey is a member of the University Council, University of Liverpool, and the Board of Advisors of the 21st Century Trust Foundation in the United Kingdom. He is Trustee Emeritus of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Chancellor and Professor Emeritus of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Duffey served as Director of the United States Information Agency and was President of American University in Washington, DC, and Chancellor and President of the University of Massachusetts. He was Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities under Presidents Carter and Reagan, Adjunct Professor at Yale University and Fellow of the JFK School of Government at Harvard University. Duffey holds honorary degrees from fourteen American colleges and universities and in 1993 was awarded the honorary Doctor of Letter by Ritsemaken University in Japan. In 1980 he was named Commander of the Order of the Crown by the King of Belgium. He has been a member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 1979. A native of West Virginia and a graduate of Marshall University, Duffey received graduate degrees from Yale University, Andover Newton Theological School and the Hartford Seminary Foundation. He has published widely on themes relating to higher education and social and economic issues. Duffey has been Stern Lecturer at Syracuse University, Lund Lecturer at Northwestern University, Sparkman Lecturer at the University of Alabama, and Lesser Lecturer at the University of Southern California.
