America and the Muslim World
Islam remained largely on the periphery of American public discourse until the terrorist attacks of 9/11. In the decade since, discussion of Islam has revolved largely around security issues—terrorism and extremism, wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Iran’s potential nuclear weapons program.
But America’s encounter with the Muslim world stretches back 400 years, before the American Revolution and the founding of the republic. It reflects the full spectrum of cross-cultural and inter-faith interaction.
CSPC is engaged in a broad initiative to explore America’s far-ranging engagement with the Muslim world, including the experiences of Muslims in America. The Center’s work in this area currently revolves around three major issues.
- Engaging Muslim Communities
- Countering Transnational Terrorism
- Religious Pluralism and the Muslim Experience in America
