Chris Lu Joins CSPC as Senior Fellow

CSPC announced today that former White House Cabinet Secretary Chris Lu is joining the organization as a Senior Fellow. With his unique experience in both the Executive and Legislative Branches, Chris will bring a wealth of insights on government leadership, current political dynamics, and how today's leaders can utilize the lessons of history.

CSPC Vice Chairman Dr. David Abshire Column on Sen. Bob Corker Published in Chattanooga Times Free Press

On June 18, 2013 CSPC Vice Chairman Dr. David Abshire was published in the Chattanooga Times Free Press. Abshire's column was an op-ed in praise of his fellow Chattanoogan Senator Bob Corker, who has been a great example of bipartisan leadership in the Senate.

CSPC Vice Chairman Dr. David Abshire Op-Ed Published in Latin American Herald Tribune

An op-ed by CSPC Vice Chairman Dr. David Abshire was published in the Latin American Herald Tribune on May 31, 2013.  Abshire relates his experience advising President Ronald Reagan during the Iran Contra convtrovesy to the present situation facing President Obama resulting from the IRS scandal.  Abshire believes that Obama has a chance to save his second term, arguing that "the story of second terms has two potential endings. For the president this is an opportunity, like Reagan, to boldly seize the higher ground in a constructive, bipartisan way, and have an ending built around resiliency rather than scandal."

CSPC Presidential Fellow Samantha Moyer Interviewed by The Institute of World Politics

Samantha Moyer, CSPC's 2012-2013 Maibach Fellow from The Institute of World Politics (IWP), was interviewed for IWP's news site. In the interview, Moyer touched on her experience as a CSPC Presidential Fellow. In describing what struck her most about her Fellows experience, Moyer says, "how I, as an undergrad, would never have been chosen to go to such a conference!  The students there were so impressive and accomplished at such young ages.  I really enjoyed hearing their opinions on every subject from social issues to politics to history, etc.  We had a number of excellent, interesting guest speakers.  The highlight for me was the brief, private audience we were afforded with Justice Sandra Day O'Connor at the Supreme Court.  She was inspirational."

CSPC Vice Chairman Dr. David Abshire and Trustee David Gergen Quoted in Politico

CSPC Vice Chairman Dr. David Abshire and Trustee David Gergen are quoted in a May 17 article on Politico about Obama's response to the recent wave of scandals in Washington.

The article quotes Dr. Abshire: “If you’ve got a bum tooth, you’ve got to pull it,” said [David] Abshire, who now leads the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress and supports something modeled on the Tower Commission to look into what happened at the IRS."

CSPC Study on Second Presidential Terms Featured on CNN Gut Check Column

In CNN.com's May 14, 2013 Gut Check column, a CSPC case study on Presidential Second terms by political scientist John P. Burke was quoted on the effect of the three recent scandals (Benghazi, IRS, and the Associated Press) on Obama's second term agenda.

From the article: "A president's second term 'is likely to be an uphill road,' Burke writes, and one 'not particularly well marked for historical success.'

The issue for Obama, as is the case with most second term presidents, is the timing of such controversies. As Burke told Gut Check, Obama's power only wanes from this point on."
