International Fellows Program Fall Newsletter

Seven international scholars from Brazil, Canada, Japan, Mexico, and Spain traveled to Washington, D.C. to take part in the CSPC Fall Leadership Conference. Before the Conference got underway, the International Fellows were able to tour the sites of our nations Capital, such as the National Archives, the Supreme Court, and the Library of Congress.

Presidential Fellows Fall Conference Newsletter

From October 31-November 2, CSPC welcomed the 2013-2014 Presidential Fellows to Washington, D.C. for the Fall Leadership Conference. Sixty-six students from colleges and universities located throughout the country and seven International Fellows from universities in Brazil, Canada, Japan, Mexico, and Spain participated in the conference.

CSPC Trustee Ambassador Francis Rooney Addresses the Relocation of the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See in Two CNN Articles

On Wednesday, November 27 CSPC Trustee Ambassador Francis Rooney expressed his concerns over the recent announcement that the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See will be relocating to a new compound. Many believe that the move will not influence relations between the Holy See and the U.S., but Ambassador Rooney believes that this relocation could be interpretered as a slight to the Vatican.

CSPC Trustee Ambassador Nicholas Burns Answers Three Questions Concerning the Recent Nuclear Deal with Iran

On Sunday, November 24 CSPC Trustee Ambassdor Nicholar Burns answered three questions concerning the recent deal formed in Geneva, which will halt the development of the Iranian nuclear program. Burns commented that the deal is a representation of how diplomacy can be successful and is a positive step towards fully dismantling the entire nuclear program.

CSPC Director of Policy Dan Mahaffee Quoted in China's Xinhua About The Future of the Democratic Party

On Thursday, November 21 CSPC Director of Policy Dan Mahaffee discussed in China's Xinhua Daily how the rollout of the Affordable Care Act has led some in the Democratic Party to consider distancing themselves from the Obama Administration, due to the upcoming 2014 election cycle.

CSPC Trustee Ambassador Nicholas Burns Discusses Lessons Learned From Kennedy Presidency in Boston Globe

On Thursday, November 21 CSPC Trustee Ambassador Nicholas Burns wrote an opinion piece in the Boston Globe discussing three lessons learned from the Kennedy Presidency--mobilizing and challenging young people to get involved with government by stating "ask what you can do"; altering the attitude towards the Cold War, represented by the Cuban Missile Crisis; and urging Americans to resist "demonizing our adversaries and thinking war is inevitable", a view that could be applied to the U.S. relationship with countries such as Iran or North Korea. Citing these lessons, Burns argues that the Kennedy legacy continues to have significant influence within American society and politics.

On Friday, November 8 CSPC Trustee Ambassador Francis Rooney was featured on NBC's Morning Joe discussing his book The Global Vatican, which recounts his experience as Ambassador to the Holy See and his vision of the role of the Vatican in international diplomacy.

On Thursday, November 7 CSPC Chairman Ambassador Tom Pickering was quoted in the New York Times on the United States' position as it enters negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program.

CSPC Trustee David Gergen Discusses CSPC Vice Chairman David Abshire's Role in Resolving Iran-Contra on the Diane Rehm Show

On Monday, November 4 CSPC Trustee David Gergen was interviewd on NPR's Diane Rehm Show about President Obama's leadership and management style. On the program, Gergen also referenced CSPC Vice Chairman David Abshire's role in resolving the Iran-Contra Affair, saying: "But when Ronald Reagan went through Iran-Contra and it darn near ruined his presidency -- it was a terrible scandal -- he brought in David Abshire, you know, a Washington pillar of strength who knew a lot about national security. And they did a terrific job at damage control. I think they need somebody in there now independent who doesn't have a full-time job."
