Prosperity_or_Decline_coverThe Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress (CSPC) has completed the Strengthening America’s Future Initiative (SAFI), a comprehensive study to identify the critical challenges that face the United States, and to develop a roadmap for regaining our strategic and financial freedom of action, unity at home and standing abroad. At a time of deep division and dysfunction in Washington, our nonpartisan Steering Committee of prominent experts and highly specialized Issue Teams worked together to developed prioritized recommendations within a conceptual framework to address our nation’s most pressing challenges.

Center President David Abshire Calls for Immediate NATO Renewal

On February 23, Center President and former NATO ambassador, David Abshire, participated in a high profile seminar on the future of NATO at the National Defense University. The event featured Secretary Gates, Secretary General Rasmussen, and a bevy of preeminent European and American security experts.  In a recent op-ed featured in the Christian Science Monitor, Ambassador Abshire explains why NATO needs immediate renewal, why NATO’s in house reform efforts have proven ineffective, and what needs to be done for such a renewal to take place.  To read the Christian Science Monitor article, click here.

 

 

CSPC President Dr. David Abshire speaks to the Chattanooga Rotary Club

Last Thursday, CSPC President David Abshire spoke to the Chattanooga Rotary Club during a luncheon at their headquarters in downtown Chattanooga.  He was joined by University of Tennessee-Chattanooga Chancellor, Dr. Roger G. Brown.  In his speech, Dr. Abshire focused on President Obama’s leadership and his role as Commander-in-Chief, drawing parallels with President Abraham Lincoln’s decision-making during the Civil War and President Franklin Roosevelt’s leadership during the great depression and World War II.  He suggested that President Obama must use his considerable rhetorical skills to better communicate his goals to the public both at home and abroad, just as he did during his Nobel Peace Prize Speech this summer.  To read Dr. Abshire’s speech, click here .

Center Rolls Out NATO Capabilities Report on Capitol Hill

In anticipation of the January 28th international conference on Afghanistan in London, the Center released its first in a series of reports during a January 26th event on Capitol Hill. The event was co-sponsored by US Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Lindsey Graham, and featured project experts Bruce Riedel, James Dobbins, former NATO Ambassadors David Abshire, Robert Hunter and Kurt Volker, and former Secretary of Defense Representative to Europe Bruce Weinrod. The event was attended by a number of Ambassadors and representatives from a wide range of NATO countries.

Center Releases First Report on Mobilizing NATO in Afghanistan and Pakistan

on January 26, 2010

In anticipation of the January 28 international conference, Afghanistan: The London Conference, the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress’ new initiative, Mobilizing NATO for Afghanistan and Pakistan: Ensuring the Alliance’s Future, is releasing its first report on how the Alliance can maximize its contributions and more effectively and efficiently conduct the Afghan and Pakistan effort. This report identifies areas of immediate reform that would strengthen the international coalition while also examining key capacities NATO allies have yet to deploy to Afghanistan that would turn the tide against the extremist insurgency.

CSPC Releases Report of SAFI Small and Mid-size Business Issue Team

on October 21, 2009
On October 21st, 2009, the Center's Strenthening America's Future Initiative released the final report of the U.S. Innovation and Growth: Small and Mid-size Business issue team. This group of experts has met, thought, and written together since 2008 to find ways that the Administration and Congress can confront the fiscal crisis by helping small and mid-sized American businesses flourish.
