In a recent National Journal feature, "Can Obama Dodge the Second-Term Trap?", George E. Condon Jr. cites a CSPC study on second-terms by John P. Burke and Presidential Studies Quarterly Editor George C. Edwards III. Edwards says that he remains optimistic that President Obama will not fall into the trap of second-term overreach because the President already learned his lesson from harsh mid-term opposition in 2010 in response to his overreaching in the early days of his first term. Burke argues that picking a good team is essential, as history has shown a correlation between the replacement of close advisers and the tendency for scandal in second terms.
